In 2008 Big Papi and Scottsdale trainer Brent Naylor rolled the dice when they walked into the Derby arena as the only horse sporting a hackamore – but they walked out with the derby intermediate open championship after laying down a fetching 224 run for owners the Big Papi Syndicate, Scottsdale.
At the same event in 2009, Brent and Big Papi won again, this time capturing both the Level 1 and Limited Open Derby Championships. |

| Cactus Reining Classic - Arizona |
In 2009 Big Papi and Brent Naylor, Scottsdale, Arizona, captured the Open Derby Championship at this year's Cactus Reining Classic held March 4-8 at the West World Equidome in Scottsdale. The NRHA rated show paid out $100,000 in added money and hosted its signature one-run derby that drew exhibitors from several western states.
Naylor and Big Papi scored a 224 to take home both the Open and Intermediate Open Derby Championships and collective winnings of $13,166. |
